Anwar, Abang Johari Discuss Next Steps As Serian API Surpasses 500

Date:

Further action over the hazardous air pollution in Serian, where the Air Pollutant Index (API) has exceeded 500, will be discussed with the Sarawak government, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

Anwar said he had been in contact with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg since Wednesday to discuss the worsening situation.

He said authorities would take the necessary safety measures, including suspending operations at government offices and schools if a state of emergency was declared following the deteriorating API readings.

However, he clarified that any recommendation to close public premises would not apply to security agencies.

“We will take all necessary measures, whether cloud seeding or other action, even though this haze is a result of developments elsewhere.

“We have to bear with it and be patient for a while. I pray that everyone in Serian, Sarawak and other affected areas remains safe,” he said.

Anwar was speaking to reporters after Friday prayers here today.

He also expressed hope that the haze situation across the country would improve soon.
