‘Make Suspects Look Guilty’, PAS Says MACC Right To Suspend ‘Orange Jumpsuits’

Date:

PAS has welcomed the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) immediate suspension of its practice of making suspects wear orange attire when brought to court for remand proceedings.

PAS deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the move was appropriate as individuals brought before the court for remand are not being charged with any offence.

“They are not being charged. They are only going through the process of extending their remand.

“So when they are made to wear orange clothing, handcuffed and so on, it gives the impression that they have already been found guilty or are being tried in court,” he said.

Tuan Ibrahim was speaking at a press conference during PAS’ 75th anniversary celebrations held in conjunction with the party’s 72nd annual muktamar at the Pusat Tarbiah Islamiah Kelantan (PUTIK) in Pengkalan Chepa on Friday.

MACC chief commissioner Datuk Seri Abd Halim Aman had earlier announced that the wearing of orange attire by suspects brought to court for remand applications had been suspended with immediate effect.

He said the decision followed recent developments and recommendations concerning the handling of individuals under investigation, particularly when they are brought before the court.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had earlier said individuals detained by MACC would no longer need to wear orange attire when brought to court for remand proceedings.

Anwar said those merely cooperating with the authorities should first be investigated before any further action is decided.

Tuan Ibrahim said PAS viewed the MACC’s decision positively and welcomed the move.

“Personally, I see this as a positive step, and PAS welcomes it,” he said.
