Education Minister Datuk Seri Fadhlina Sidek has urged parents and school communities in Sarawak to rely on official updates from the Sarawak State Education Department (JPN) amid worsening haze conditions in the state.
In a Facebook post last night, Fadhlina said the health and safety of children must remain the top priority, while Sarawak JPN would continue monitoring the situation and issue updates when necessary.
“Take care of your health and reduce outdoor activities during this haze condition. The safety of the children and school community is our priority,” she said.
Sarawak JPN earlier announced that 647 primary and secondary schools across the state will be temporarily closed for five days from Sept 7 to 11 due to unhealthy Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in several areas.
The closure involves 563 primary schools with 108,477 pupils and 84 secondary schools involving 90,082 students. Teaching and Learning at Home (PdPR) will be implemented during the closure.
The move comes as haze levels continue to pose concerns over public health, particularly in affected areas.
Meanwhile, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has consented to the proclamation of a state of emergency throughout Serian, Sarawak, following haze pollution levels reaching a point deemed hazardous to public health and safety.
