A 28-year-old Thai woman was charged in the Magistrate’s Court on Friday with allegedly soliciting customers for prostitution and breaching the conditions of her travel pass by engaging in the activity.
However, no plea was recorded from Nanthicha Bunrod after she told Magistrate Aimi Nawwar Mohamad Othman that she did not understand Malay.
Nanthicha allegedly committed the first offence at a hotel near Jalan Abu Bakar at about 6.30pm on Aug 31.
She was charged under Section 372B of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum jail term of one year, a fine, or both upon conviction.
The second charge alleges that she breached the conditions of her travel pass by engaging in prostitution at the same time, date and location.
The offence falls under Regulation 11(7) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 and is punishable under Regulation 39(b).
Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Shahzleen Ibrahim appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Tan Song Yan represented Nanthicha.
The court fixed Sept 9 for mention of the case, when a Thai interpreter will be present.
No bail was offered to the accused.
