‘False’: US Rejects Hadi’s Claim That Washington Offered Help To Overthrow Umno

Date:

The United States has denied ever interfering in determining Malaysia’s political leadership, dismissing reports and allegations suggesting otherwise as untrue.

US Embassy in Malaysia Chargé d’Affaires David H Gamble Jr said Washington had never sought to influence who should lead the country.

“The United States has never sought to determine Malaysia’s political leadership.

“Any reports stating otherwise are false,” he said in a brief statement on Sunday.

The denial came following media reports on an allegation by PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang that the US had once offered to help the party topple Umno and take over the government.

Abdul Hadi claimed the alleged offer was made during former US president Barack Obama’s visit to Malaysia in 2014.

He also stressed that foreign powers should not interfere in determining Malaysia’s leadership, saying priority should instead be given to addressing divisions and resolving political crises within the country.
