PAS has questioned Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) response to its president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s claim that the United States had attempted to interfere in Malaysia’s political affairs before 2018.
PAS Information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari described PH’s reaction as an “overreaction”, saying Hadi had only alleged that there were attempts by the US to interfere in the country’s political affairs and had not implicated any PH leaders or parties.
“The US Embassy in Malaysia has denied this. There are legal avenues to resolve a dispute between two parties involved, namely through a civil suit,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday.
Ahmad Fadhli questioned why PH members had reacted strongly to the allegation and lodged several police reports.
“What interest do they (PH) have in this issue? Why are they suddenly overreacting and lodging police reports? Did the PAS president implicate anyone from PH in this matter? Not at all.
“So why are they overreacting? Or are they actually connected to it?” he questioned.
Previously, Hadi claimed during the PAS Annual Muktamar that US representatives had offered to assist PAS in bringing down the Barisan Nasional government before the 14th General Election (GE14).
He also alleged that PAS leaders had met representatives from the US Embassy and that a US ambassador had asked who PAS would nominate as prime minister if there was a change in government.
The US Embassy in Malaysia has since denied the allegations, stressing that Washington had never attempted to determine Malaysia’s political leadership.
