An 18-year-old woman died after the motorcycle she was riding crashed into a pickup truck believed to have stopped on the road shoulder along Kilometer 9 of Jalan Lambir, part of the Bintulu-Miri Pan Borneo Highway, on Sunday morning.
Miri District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Farhan Lee Abdullah said the accident happened at about 9.50am, leaving the teenager critically injured before she died at the scene after becoming trapped underneath the vehicle.
He said initial investigations found that the pickup, driven by a 61-year-old man, was travelling from Bintulu towards Miri before reportedly stopping on the road shoulder.
“While the vehicle was on the road shoulder, the motorcycle ridden by the victim is believed to have crashed into the rear of the pickup.
“As a result of the accident, the victim died at the scene,” he said.
The pickup driver escaped the crash without injuries.
Police are appealing to anyone with information about the accident to contact Traffic Investigating Officer Inspector Nor Afifah Nordin at 019-526 4640 or 085-430 479.
