The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) has reminded Muslims to comply with a government gazette ruling that prohibits Muslims from practising yoga when it combines physical exercises with religious elements and specific forms of worship.
In a recent post on its official Facebook page, JAWI said the ruling was gazetted on April 2, 2009, and warned that action could be taken against those who violate the provisions under the Syariah Criminal Offences (Federal Territories) Act 1997 (Act 559).
JAWI also advised Muslims to exercise caution when participating in activities or sports that contain elements of other religious beliefs, mysticism or practices that contradict Islamic beliefs and teachings.
According to JAWI, yoga originated from Hindu religious philosophy and was traditionally associated with the pursuit of liberation from samsara, release from karma and attainment of moksha.
The department explained that certain practices involving physical movements, exercises and specific chants are intended to calm the mind and achieve a spiritual state associated with union with the divine.
“Islam emphasises inner peace and spiritual strength through remembrance of the One Creator. Muslims can find peace in their hearts through zikir and remembrance of Allah, which is the path guided by Islam for Muslims,” JAWI said.
The reminder comes as part of the department’s efforts to ensure Muslims remain mindful of religious elements when taking part in various activities.
JAWI’s post has also prompted discussion online, with the issue highlighting the different religious perspectives surrounding practices that may have both physical and spiritual components.
The public is encouraged to approach discussions on religious matters responsibly and respectfully, particularly when different beliefs and interpretations are involved.
