A Malaysian woman has been arrested in India after she was allegedly caught carrying more than 15kg of cannabis worth about RM2.24 million at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Delhi Customs said the woman arrived at Terminal 3 from Kuala Lumpur on Friday and was identified during passenger profiling.
An inspection of her trolley bag allegedly uncovered 30 plastic packages containing a substance suspected to be cannabis.
“An inspection of a trolley bag she was carrying revealed 30 plastic packages containing a substance suspected to be cannabis,” Delhi Customs said in a statement.
The woman was subsequently detained and the suspected drugs seized under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
The case is being investigated under Sections 8, 20, 23 and 29 of the Act, which cover offences including illegal drug importation, abetment and criminal conspiracy.
If convicted, the offences carry imprisonment and fines.
Indian authorities have yet to reveal the woman’s identity or age.
Delhi Customs has also not disclosed where the suspected cannabis originated, who allegedly handed it to the woman or who was supposed to receive the drugs after they arrived in India.
It is also unclear whether the woman had been offered payment to transport the suspected drugs.
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
