Handcuffed Abdul Azeez Walks Out After Posting RM450,000 Bail

Date:

Former Lembaga Tabung Haji chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim emerged from the lock-up in purple remand attire and handcuffs after posting RM450,000 bail over a corruption charge involving an alleged lucrative company chairmanship.

The 60-year-old former Baling MP was met by a large group of photographers and videographers who had gathered outside since 7am as he was escorted by police to the bail payment counter.

Two family members stood as his bailors. The bail process was completed in less than five minutes.

Azeez, who appeared calm, briefly told reporters that he was doing well before being taken out through a back entrance.

He is expected to be handed over by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to police, who will facilitate investigations under a two-day remand order under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Earlier, Azeez claimed trial to allegedly using his position as TH chairman 12 years ago to secure the chairmanship of Putrajaya Perdana Bhd, a position that carried annual remuneration of RM690,000, along with the use of a BMW 7 Series and a full-time driver.

According to the charge, Azeez allegedly instructed TH chief executive officer Tan Sri Ismee Ismail to nominate him as the fund’s representative on the board of Putrajaya Perdana Bhd.

He is also accused of persuading members of the TH board during Board of Directors Meeting No. 4/2014 (309) to approve an investment of up to RM193.5 million, equivalent to up to 30% of the company’s existing issued share capital, in Putrajaya Perdana Bhd, in which he allegedly had an interest.

Azeez was charged under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act, punishable under Section 24(1).

The offence carries a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of at least five times the value of the gratification involved or RM10,000, whichever is higher.
