US President Donald Trump has promised to issue a US$5,000 (about RM20,350) dividend to every adult American if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in November’s election.
Speaking at a Republican convention in Dallas on Wednesday, Trump said the payout would be possible because of what he described as the country’s strong economic performance.
“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them … because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said.
He added one condition to the proposed payment, saying the money would have to be spent within the United States.
“The only caveat I have is that the dividend that we’re making must be spent in the United States of America,” Trump said.
Trump did not provide further details on the proposed dividend, including how the payments would be funded, who would qualify beyond adult citizens or when they would be distributed.
The announcement comes as Republicans campaign to maintain control of the US House of Representatives and Senate in the November election.
