DAP Threatens Cabinet Exit If Najib Is Pardoned

Date:

A Kuala Lumpur DAP leader has urged the party’s ministers and deputy ministers to resign from the Cabinet if former prime minister Najib Razak is granted a pardon.

Kuala Lumpur DAP treasurer Ben Fong said it would be “untenable” for DAP to remain in the Government if Najib, who is serving a prison sentence for a graft conviction, were released.

“This is a red line that we cannot cross,” he said in a statement.

The call comes as the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) is expected to meet tomorrow to consider several matters, including Najib’s application for a pardon over his convictions linked to the 1MDB scandal.

Najib, 72, was convicted six years ago of misappropriating RM42 million belonging to SRC International. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million, and has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since August 2022.

The FTPB subsequently reduced his prison term to six years and his fine to RM50 million.

In December 2025, Najib was also convicted of abuse of power and money laundering involving more than RM2 billion linked to 1MDB. He was sentenced to another 15 years in prison and fined RM11.38 billion. He is appealing against the conviction.

Fong said DAP’s withdrawal from the Cabinet would not necessarily result in the collapse of the Government.

Instead, he said the party could continue supporting the administration from outside the Cabinet to maintain political stability while pushing for institutional reforms.

“But stability cannot become an excuse for accepting everything. Political leaders must recognise that some lines cannot be crossed,” he said.

DAP currently has five ministers and seven deputy ministers in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration.
