All Flying Doctor Service (FDS) operations in Sarawak have been temporarily suspended following a helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Miri, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said on Thursday.
In a statement, Dzulkefly said the suspension would give authorities time to investigate the crash and review existing safety and operational procedures.
However, emergency medical evacuation services for urgent cases will continue through cooperation between the Health Ministry and the Fire and Rescue Department.
“The safety of personnel and patients remains the ministry’s priority, alongside ensuring the continued delivery of healthcare services to rural communities,” he said.
Dzulkefly said the ministry would also consider using Armed Forces assets to transport patients requiring emergency treatment to appropriate healthcare facilities.
He added that the ministry would carry out a comprehensive assessment of the FDS in Sarawak, covering its contracts, governance, operational safety, coverage requirements and the effectiveness of the current service model.
The ministry is also reviewing FDS locations and access methods, including safe and practical alternatives for transporting patients.
