A one-year-old baby boy died after he was found unconscious with bluish lips at his babysitter’s home in Kampung Melayu, Air Itam, on Tuesday.
Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Rozak Muhammad said police received a report from the Emergency and Trauma Department of Penang Hospital at 5.16pm regarding the baby’s death.
He said the baby was taken to the hospital by his mother and the babysitter at about 2.45pm after he was found unconscious.
“Preliminary investigations found that the victim was discovered by his babysitter, a 44-year-old local woman, at about 2pm at the babysitter’s home.
“The victim was then rushed to Penang Hospital by his mother and the babysitter for emergency treatment,” he said in a statement on Thursday.
Abdul Rozak said the baby was pronounced dead at 3.33pm after receiving emergency treatment.
Police have since detained the babysitter and the baby’s mother to assist investigations into the incident.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on Wednesday, but the cause of death has yet to be determined.
“The cause of death is still pending the results of laboratory analysis,” Abdul Rozak said.
The case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001.
He added that the babysitter was remanded for seven days from Sept 9 to 15, while the baby’s mother was remanded for three days from Sept 9 to 11 to assist with further investigations.
