Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called on the unity government to reinstate the Goods and Services Tax (GST), urging Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to listen to public sentiment.
Zahid questioned the proposal for a hybrid taxation system combining GST with the existing Sales and Service Tax (SST), claiming that no country currently uses such an arrangement.
He said the government should restructure the country’s tax regime and return to the GST system.
“Restructure the tax regime. Change the taxation system back to GST,” he said during his policy speech at the 2026 Umno General Assembly at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today.
Addressing Anwar as “guru”, which means teacher, Zahid said: “Guru, listen to what the people are saying.”
The reference to “guru” was linked to a leaked telephone conversation between Zahid and Anwar in April 2021, during which Zahid referred to Anwar using the term.
