Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to accelerate the implementation of bilateral agreements while continuing efforts to strengthen air connectivity between Malaysia and Russia.
One of the key outcomes of their meeting on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit here was Putin’s agreement to establish a special mechanism to expedite the implementation of bilateral agreements, aimed at translating government commitments into more tangible economic outcomes.
The two leaders also discussed efforts to accelerate the establishment of direct air links between Malaysia and Russia, as well as visa-free travel arrangements that could facilitate the movement of tourists, business travellers and investors between the two markets.
Anwar also raised the potential for Russia to increase imports of Malaysian palm oil, which could provide wider market access for Malaysian producers while strengthening agricultural trade between the two countries.
He expressed appreciation for Russia’s support for energy cooperation with Malaysia, while highlighting the sector’s potential to become a stronger pillar of bilateral economic relations.
The proposed special mechanism will provide a more structured channel for both governments to monitor and speed up the implementation of agreements in key sectors, while reducing delays between commitments and their actual execution.
During the meeting, Anwar conveyed greetings from Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim and reiterated His Majesty’s invitation to Putin to undertake a state visit to Malaysia.
The discussions underscored Malaysia’s efforts to move beyond diplomatic ties towards more concrete commercial outcomes with Russia, while leveraging its BRICS partnership to expand trade and investment links with major emerging markets.
