Giant 3.6-Metre, 100kg Crocodile Takes Authorities Three Hours To Capture

Date:

Beachgoers near a hotel in Teluk Bahang were shocked when they spotted a massive saltwater crocodile estimated to weigh more than 100 kilograms. The reptile, measuring about 3.65 metres long, was first seen by visitors enjoying the beach.

According to Northeast District Civil Defence Officer Captain (PA) Muhammad Aizat Abdul Ghani, his team received a call about the sighting at 3:50 p.m. The crocodile capture operation involved 20 personnel with assistance from the police, the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Penang, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) and local fishermen.

“The crocodile was seen near the beach close to a hotel. Our team attempted to capture it using a net and pull it with a fishing boat. However, the first attempt failed when the net tore, allowing the reptile to escape back into the sea,” Muhammad Aizat said.

After nearly three hours, the team successfully captured the crocodile, brought it ashore, and handed it over to Perhilitan for further action.

He added that the Civil Defence Force’s beach rescue unit will continue patrolling the waters to monitor for other crocodiles. The public has been advised to exercise caution when swimming or relaxing in the area.
