Mount Semeru in East Java erupted three times on Monday morning, sending volcanic ash up to 1,000 metres above its peak, according to Indonesian authorities.
The Centre for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) said the highest ash column was recorded during an eruption at 6.28am local time, reaching about 4,676 metres above sea level.
Data published on its website showed the eruption lasted 140 seconds.
It followed two earlier eruptions at 4.20am and 5.53am, which sent ash columns approximately 500 metres and 800 metres above the volcano’s peak respectively.
Meanwhile, Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted at 12.39am, producing a thick grey ash column that rose about 200 metres above its peak before drifting eastward.
PVMBG said the eruption lasted 53 seconds.
Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara also erupted at 4.30am, sending ash about 200 metres above its peak.
The volcano released white ash that was observed drifting towards the northwest, with the eruption lasting 34 seconds.
