Eight Killed, More Than 60 Missing After Gaza Apartment Block Collapses

Date:

Rescuers searched through the rubble on Wednesday after a six-storey apartment building collapsed in Gaza, killing eight people, including children, according to authorities in the war-torn enclave.

Gaza’s civil defence agency said the building in the Tal al-Hawa area had been sheltering people displaced by the war with Israel.

The collapse also crushed nearby residences and tents, raising fears that the death toll could increase as rescue teams continue searching for survivors.

Civil defence spokesman Mahmoud Basal told AFP that the building had sustained structural damage from Israeli strikes.

“The bodies of eight martyrs including children and 15 injured individuals have been recovered from the rubble,” Basal said.

Basal said more than 60 people remained missing following the collapse.

Rescue teams continued combing through the debris on Wednesday in an effort to locate those still trapped or unaccounted for.
