MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong expects the 16th General Election (GE16) to be held within the next four to five months, based on the length of previous federal administrations.
Wee said the party was already well prepared for the election and noted that governments had rarely served a full five-year term before dissolving Parliament.
“Looking at the previous 15 general elections, how long did each administration last? I think it was around four years, give or take, or between three years eight months and four years and 11 months.
“If it is to be expedited, I think that is what usually happens. It does not reach five years,” he told reporters after opening the MCA Johor annual convention in Yong Peng yesterday.
Wee said MCA had been making preparations well in advance rather than waiting until an election was imminent.
He also said the party was ready to face GE16 at any time, including if it were called earlier than expected.
Malaysia’s next general election must be held before the current parliamentary term expires, but Wee’s four-to-five-month timeframe is his expectation rather than a confirmed election date.
Wee added that MCA’s focus was not on the number of parliamentary seats it would contest, but on securing victories in the constituencies it was given.
On a proposal by the Kluang Umno division for MCA to make way for Umno to contest the Kluang parliamentary seat in GE16, Wee said the matter could be discussed at grassroots level.
However, he said the final decision on seat allocations would rest with the Barisan Nasional leadership, including any proposals to exchange or loan seats.
“What is more important is that if BN places a candidate, that is the candidate who represents BN,” he said.
