Three men who allegedly abandoned their car after a crash that killed a Malaysian Volunteer Corps (Rela) member in Bentong are believed to have links to criminal activities, including vehicle theft.
The trio were travelling in a Perodua Myvi when it was involved in the fatal accident at about 7.30am on Sept 14 along Jalan Mempaga-Sertik. They are believed to have gone into hiding after abandoning the vehicle at the scene.
Acting Pahang police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob said police had arrested the Myvi’s owner, who had rented the vehicle to the three suspects.
Police tracked down the Bentong resident on Sept 15, and he was subsequently remanded after testing positive for drugs. According to Azry, the owner also provided information about the three men, who were his friends, and police are now working to locate them.
“Initial investigations found that the trio were involved in criminal activities, including vehicle theft,” Azry told reporters after the Pahang police monthly gathering today.
The car owner is being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or imprisonment of up to two years, as well as a supervision order.
In the crash, 41-year-old Fazlizal Abdul Samad, a Bentong Rela member, was killed at the scene after the Myvi allegedly veered into his lane and struck his motorcycle. He was on his way home after completing his duties.
