An Irish radio station has stopped playing Ed Sheeran’s songs following the controversy surrounding US rapper Macklemore’s removal from the remaining dates of Sheeran’s tour.
Classic Hits Radio made the decision after listeners called for the station to stop playing the British singer’s music.
Two Irish artists, Aaron Rowe and Beiga, have also withdrawn from the remaining shows on the tour.
Bay Broadcasting Group programme director Dave Kelly said the decision to drop Sheeran’s songs was made after considering strong reactions from listeners and Irish artists involved in the tour.
He said the station viewed itself as more than just a platform for music, stressing the importance of its relationship with the community.
“Radio has always been about more than just the music we play. It’s about community. Their views matter to us,” he said.
“We believe in peace, humanity and respect, and the right of individuals and artists to speak out and act on positions they sincerely hold,” Kelly added.
The station’s decision has since received praise from social media users in Ireland and around the world.
However, the move applies only to Classic Hits Radio and does not represent a nationwide ban on Sheeran’s music in Ireland.
The controversy erupted after Macklemore was removed from the line-up of opening acts for the remaining dates of Sheeran’s Loop Tour in North America.
Macklemore has faced controversy over his outspoken support for Gaza and Palestine during his performances.
Sheeran has said the decision to remove the rapper was not solely within his control, with several other parties, including stadium owners, reportedly objecting to Macklemore remaining part of the tour.
The singer said he had discussed the matter with promoters, venue operators and other parties in an effort to find a solution, but the final decision was ultimately outside his hands.
