19-Year-Old Mercedes Driver Charged Over Crash That Killed Family Of Four

Date:

A 19-year-old university student has been charged with reckless and dangerous driving over a five-vehicle crash in Simpang Renggam that killed four members of a family in June.

Goh Yin Zun pleaded not guilty when the charge was read before magistrate Norasidah A Rahman at the magistrate’s court today.

He was accused of driving a Mercedes-Benz recklessly and dangerously to other road users at KM27 of Jalan Renggam-Simpang Renggam at about 1.19pm on June 1.

The charge was brought under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum five-year jail term and a fine of up to RM15,000 upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Nik Noratini Nik Azam initially offered bail at RM20,000, while Goh was represented by lawyers Mohd Daud Ismail and Hang Lee Ying.

Daud appealed for a lower bail amount, saying his client was a young offender pursuing a diploma in business studies in Singapore. He added that Goh had fully cooperated with authorities after his arrest and was later released on police bail in June.

The court granted bail at RM10,000 with one surety and ordered Goh to report to the nearest police station once a month.

The case was fixed for mention on Nov 20, when the prosecution is also expected to submit the relevant documents.

The June 1 crash, which occurred in front of Simpang Renggam prison, involved five vehicles and claimed the lives of four family members travelling in a Toyota Vios.

The victims were identified as Aiman Mohd Rashid, 36; his wife, Nor Azlina Abd Latip, 33; his mother-in-law, Semek Mat Soh, 73; and his 10-year-old niece, Nur Airish Syifa Sidek.

Two other people were injured in the crash.
