Two Malaysians have been arrested in Singapore after allegedly attempting to smuggle more than 10kg of cannabis into the country, according to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA), as reported by Channel News Asia.
The suspects, a 36-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman, arrived at the Tuas Checkpoint yesterday on a motorcycle bearing a Malaysian registration number.
Based on information received from the ICA’s Integrated Targeting Centre, officers stopped the motorcycle for inspection.
During the search, ICA officers found four bundles of a vegetable substance believed to be a controlled drug hidden under the motorcycle seat, the authority said in a statement.
Officers from Singapore’s Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) were alerted and carried out further checks.
They subsequently found six more bundles containing a vegetable substance believed to be a controlled drug inside a black backpack placed on the motorcycle’s bar.
The seized packages were found to contain about 10.1kg of cannabis, according to the ICA.
“The seized drugs are estimated to be worth more than S$203,000 (RM649,787) and could have supplied around 1,450 drug abusers for a week,” the ICA said.
Investigations into the case are ongoing.
