DAP’s Anthony Loke Siew Fook resigning as Transport Minister sends a clear message that the party remains firm in rejecting corruption and governance failures, said Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman.
Young Syefura, who is also DAP national publicity assistant secretary, said the decision by the party’s secretary-general represented a clear line for DAP and its position against compromising on governance-related offences.
However, she stressed that Pakatan Harapan (PH) remained committed to supporting the Unity Government to maintain political stability and ensure the Cabinet could continue functioning normally.
“We in DAP always respect and uphold the decision of His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, as well as the provisions of the Federal Constitution,” she told Utusan Malaysia.
She said Loke’s resignation should be viewed as a message to Malaysians that DAP remained consistent in its stated opposition to kleptocracy, corruption and leakages.
Loke had previously offered to resign as Transport Minister following the decision to grant former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak a conditional pardon.
The resignation proposal was brought to the DAP Central Executive Committee (CEC) as the party discussed its response to developments surrounding Najib’s house arrest.
Young Syefura said the party’s immediate priority was to safeguard the country’s and people’s wellbeing rather than pursue political interests.
She warned that political instability at a time when the country was progressing could ultimately affect ordinary Malaysians.
“People’s interests come before political interests.
“If political instability occurs when the country is on the right track, the people will be the ones who lose. Therefore, the priority is the wellbeing of the country and its people,” she said.
