A 91-year-old woman has died after being attacked by a monkey at her home in Koppal, Karnataka, India.
The victim, Najamunnisa Begum, was the wife of renowned writer M S Savadatti. According to her family, Begum was walking through the compound of her home in B.T. Patil Nagar when a monkey suddenly attacked her, causing her to fall.
The incident was captured by a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera installed outside the house.
Begum’s daughter attempted to help her but was also attacked by the animal. Begum was subsequently taken to a private hospital for treatment.
Her condition was initially said to have improved, but her health later deteriorated and she died while receiving treatment the following day.
The incident came amid several recent reports of monkey attacks involving elderly women in India, including cases that turned fatal.
On Sept 10, a 55-year-old woman died after falling from the roof of her house while trying to escape a group of monkeys in Gabhana, Aligarh. She had reportedly gone to the roof to hang clothes out to dry when she was surrounded by the animals.
A similar incident was reported in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, several days later. A woman died after falling from a roof following a sudden monkey attack at a cemetery.
The incident sparked protests by residents, who raised concerns over the growing threat posed by monkeys in the city.
Residents and local representatives also called for compensation of 500,000 rupees (RM21,300) to be paid to the victim’s family.
