Malaysian Woman Discovers Fiancé’s RM282K Debt Just Three Months Before Wedding

Date:

A Malaysian woman has been left questioning her upcoming marriage after discovering that her fiancé allegedly has around RM282,000 in debt, significantly more than she had previously been told.

According to her post, the couple are just three months away from their wedding, with deposits for the ceremony already paid and a home prepared for them.

However, she recently discovered that her fiancé allegedly has two car loans totalling around RM230,000, alongside approximately RM52,000 in credit card debt.

She said the amount itself was not the only thing that upset her. What hurt her most was believing that the couple had been honest with each other about their financial commitments since the beginning of their relationship.

The woman said she felt “cheated” after discovering that the figures her fiancé had previously disclosed were allegedly inaccurate.

She claimed her fiancé is now considering taking out a personal loan to consolidate several existing debts into a single repayment arrangement, with any remaining funds potentially being used towards their wedding expenses.

Despite her concerns, she acknowledged that her fiancé had been making an effort to increase his income.

According to her, he earns around RM6,600 to RM7,000 a month after deductions and also takes on gig work to supplement his salary.

However, after calculating his monthly expenses and financial commitments, she claimed that his income was barely enough to cover everything and could sometimes leave him with a negative balance.

The situation has also left her questioning whether she should tell her mother about the financial problems before the wedding.

“Honestly, I don’t know what to do now. I don’t know whether I should tell my mum. I’m really lost, and my trust is already very fragile,” she wrote.

The couple have already paid deposits for their wedding and arranged a home to live in after getting married, making the decision even more difficult for her.

Despite feeling overwhelmed, she said she still wanted to explore whether they could cut unnecessary expenses and find ways to make her fiancé’s financial commitments more manageable.

For her, however, the biggest concern appears to be the lack of transparency and the timing of the discovery, with the wedding only three months away.

Some netizens advised her not to rush into the marriage and suggested postponing the wedding until the couple had a clear and realistic plan for managing or repaying the debt.

Others suggested that if she was more confident with financial planning, she could take responsibility for managing the household finances, including keeping proper records of her fiancé’s income, expenses and any money she contributes towards his debts.

The discussion has since highlighted the importance of having an open conversation about debt and financial commitments before entering into marriage.
