Datuk Seri Najib Razak cannot afford to pay the RM50 million fine imposed as a condition for him to serve the remainder of his SRC International sentence under house arrest, his lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said.
Speaking to reporters after court proceedings, Shafee said the former prime minister did not have the financial means to settle the amount.
“As of today, Najib himself cannot afford it… He cannot afford to pay,” he said.
Shafee claimed that Najib’s bank accounts had been frozen, including an Affin Bank account which he said was used to receive Najib’s salary as prime minister and Member of Parliament.
The lawyer also said Najib had not sought public donations to raise the RM50 million required under the condition.
The issue arose as the High Court heard Najib’s application relating to his bid to serve the remainder of his SRC International sentence under house arrest.
Najib is currently serving a prison sentence following his conviction in the SRC International case.
