Iran has offered the United States a seven-day plan that could see the Strait of Hormuz reopened to maritime traffic if Washington agrees to Tehran’s conditions, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said.
Araghchi said the proposal had been conveyed to the US through Qatar, with the timetable beginning once Washington accepts the terms. The Strait of Hormuz would then be reopened at the end of the seven-day period.
The Iranian foreign minister, who met US President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff for talks on Tuesday, said Tehran was ready to proceed if there was “seriousness” from the US side to reach an agreement and reopen the strategic shipping route.
“The choice now rests with the United States,” Araghchi said at the United Nations, adding that Iran would not accept coercion, threats or intimidation.
According to media reports cited by AFP, the proposal includes a seven-day cessation of hostilities across the Middle East, including Lebanon. Tehran is also seeking the release of at least US$12 billion (RM50.4 billion) in frozen Iranian assets, the lifting of sanctions on Iranian oil and an end to the US naval blockade of Iran.
On the seventh day of the proposed truce, Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments.
Hossein Mohebi, a spokesman for Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, also told AFP that ending hostilities in Yemen was among Tehran’s demands.
The proposal follows a June memorandum of understanding between Iran and the US that sought to end the conflict, reopen the strait and pave the way for talks on Iran’s nuclear programme. The arrangement subsequently broke down amid renewed tensions over shipping through the waterway.
Iran requires vessels to obtain authorisation before passing through the strait, citing security and sovereignty concerns. Tensions have since disrupted maritime traffic, with the US also carrying out strikes on Iranian coastal areas in retaliation for attacks.
