Russia has vowed to intensify strikes on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukraine would step up attacks on Russian oil refineries.
The Russian Defence Ministry said on Sunday that its forces would increase strikes on military facilities, defence industry sites and related infrastructure in Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions.
The warning came after Zelenskiy told Reuters in an interview published Saturday that Ukraine would double down on attacks against Russian refineries in response to Moscow’s escalating airstrike campaign.
Zelenskiy said Ukraine’s attacks would target Russian energy infrastructure but not civilians, as Moscow’s strikes increasingly focus on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
Russia has recently intensified attacks on infrastructure in the Ukrainian capital, including bridges across the Dnipro River. The campaign has disrupted daily life for Kyiv’s estimated three million residents as the country heads towards another difficult winter.
The Russian Defence Ministry said its recent attacks were in response to what it described as Ukrainian strikes on civilian targets inside Russia.
Both Moscow and Kyiv deny deliberately targeting civilians.
