Former Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung has officially joined Bersama, the political party led by former PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, after leaving PKR.
His membership took effect today, making Lee the latest former PKR leader to join the party after Rafizi, former PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and former Subang MP Wong Chen.
Lee submitted his membership application today before being formally accepted into Bersama as the party continues to expand its leadership ahead of the Melaka state election.
In a joint statement, Rafizi, Nik Nazmi and Bersama leader Syukri Razab said Lee’s entry would strengthen the party’s leadership team and that he would help lead its Melaka election campaign, particularly in building campaign machinery in Chinese-majority areas.
“Lee will be one of the leaders of Bersama during the interim period before the party holds its next leadership election, which is expected to take place next year,” they said.
Lee’s move comes after PKR suspended his membership for three years over disciplinary issues and his political activities.
The former MP won the Petaling Jaya parliamentary seat in the 2022 general election and previously served two terms as the Semambu state assemblyman in Pahang.
His relationship with PKR’s top leadership had reportedly become strained after he attended Bersama’s launch in May, although Lee defended his presence, saying the event was held within his constituency.
