A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured after allegedly falling from the third floor of a secondary school building in Kulim, Kedah, during recess last Sunday.
Kulim district police chief Syamsul Sinring said police received a report from a 48-year-old teacher after the student was found lying near the staircase of Block E at around 3.40pm.
“The complainant arrived at the scene and found the victim still conscious and able to speak. He was taken to Kulim Hospital for treatment,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian.
Syamsul said initial police interviews with the student indicated that he had intentionally fallen from the third floor, allegedly due to academic pressure.
The student reportedly told police that he often compared his academic performance with that of his older sister, who is currently a Form Four student at the same school.
“He said examinations would be held next week and he was worried that he would not be able to meet his parents’ expectations,” Syamsul said.
Police also found that several students had seen an Instagram story posted by the boy a day before the incident, in which he spoke about pressure related to his studies and family.
The post has since been deleted, while police continue their investigation into the incident.
