The Johor government is ready to assist schools across the state in strengthening security measures following the death of Form Four student Irene Sofiya Khairoul Faisal at a school in Yong Peng.
Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi said the state government fully supports initiatives by the Education Ministry, including the installation of CCTV cameras at strategic locations within school premises.
“We have received a report on the incident and will look into every angle and opportunity to ensure student safety is secured,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.
Onn Hafiz said he would also liaise with the Education Ministry on matters involving student safety.
He made the remarks after visiting Irene Sofiya’s family at Kampung Parit Selamat today, while urging the public to allow police to conduct their investigation and avoid spreading speculation.
Meanwhile, Johor education and information committee chairman Dr Naqib Ghazali said the Johor Education Department and Batu Pahat District Education Office would meet soon to review existing school safety standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Irene Sofiya, 16, was found dead in the school hall on Oct 3 by her grandmother, who had gone looking for her after she failed to return home from a tuition class.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department chief M Kumar previously said a post-mortem confirmed that Irene died from blunt force trauma to the head.
Three 16-year-old male students have been arrested to assist in the murder investigation, with one of them remanded for six days until Friday.
