A 42-year-old man from the UK, Tom Bowey, used to drink 4.5 litres of soda every day, spending about MYR 1,525 per month on the sugary drinks. Over a year, this added up to a staggering MYR 183,000, taking a heavy toll on his health and finances. His teeth suffered from acid erosion, a condition usually seen in people aged 70 and above. Eventually, he managed to quit the habit with the help of hypnotherapy.
For the past 10 years, Tom’s daily routine consisted solely of soda, with no water intake. He would start his day with a can, continue drinking several more cans while commuting and at work, and finish the day with a few more at home—sometimes consuming an entire box in a single day.
This extreme habit led to a strong dependency on caffeine and sugar, causing bloating, headaches, dizziness, chronic fatigue, and difficulty sleeping. His children often reminded him to drink water instead.
During a dental check-up, Tom was diagnosed with acid erosion, and his enamel was so worn that his teeth resembled those of a 70-year-old. He required extensive dental treatment.
Determined to change, Tom tried multiple times to quit but failed—until he turned to hypnotherapy. Therapist David Kilmurry replaced his sugary drinks with diluted fruit juice, and within weeks, Tom lost weight, regained energy, and successfully broke his soda addiction, also saving a substantial amount of money.
Now, Tom avoids soda entirely, drinks plenty of water, and feels much healthier. He even plans to take a vacation to Tenerife, Spain, next year with his daughters.
