A Japanese man has gone viral for defying conventional age norms by falling in love with his classmate’s mother, who is 21 years his senior.
Isamu Tomioka, 33, from Shizuoka Prefecture, first met Midori, now 54, during a parent-teacher meeting when he was in junior school. Their paths crossed again years later at his former classmate’s beauty salon, where Tomioka instantly recognized her and felt an immediate connection.
“I instantly fell in love with Midori,” he said, describing her as “elegant, gentle, and full of feminine charm.” On discovering she was recently divorced, he boldly asked for her contact details. Midori admitted she was “surprised” but also “very happy” to be pursued by a younger man.
Despite initial doubts over their age difference, Tomioka’s persistence and thoughtful gestures—spontaneous trips to Disneyland, private church services with her favorite songs, decorating hotel rooms with balloons and flowers, and sending daily affectionate messages—won her heart.
When they decided to marry, Midori’s parents initially opposed the union. They were concerned about her age and her inability to have more children, feeling it would be “unfair” to Tomioka, who was only 30 at the time. Determined to prove his sincerity, Tomioka purchased and meticulously decorated a 38 million yen (around US$272,000) home to show his commitment.
Eventually, both families gave their blessing, and the couple officially registered their marriage in July 2024. Tomioka became not only a husband but also a stepfather to Midori’s daughter and a “grandfather” to her four grandchildren, enjoying a harmonious relationship with the entire family.
Their story, featured on the Japanese talk show Shinkon-san Irasshai, quickly went viral, drawing widespread blessings and humorous reactions online. One netizen joked, “Never joke around in a guys’ dorm by saying ‘I am your dad’.” Another praised Tomioka’s approach: “He pursued someone he liked not just emotionally, but practically too. He delivered both emotional and material value.”
Fans celebrated the couple’s unconventional but heartfelt journey, emphasizing that happiness comes in many forms: “There is no one-size-fits-all path to marriage. As long as the two people live a good life together, that is what matters most. I wish them happiness.”
