The Sarawak state assembly could be dissolved as early as November, about two weeks after the state’s 2027 Budget is passed, according to Sarawak Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Abdul Karim said the 2027 Budget would be tabled during the upcoming state assembly sitting, with the assembly not expected to be allowed to reach the end of its current term automatically in February 2027.
“Rarely would a menteri besar, chief minister or, in Sarawak’s case, the premier, allow the state assembly to dissolve automatically, as they would usually seek its dissolution,” he said.
He said the state was already approaching the final months of the assembly’s term, making a state election necessary soon.
“The date (for the dissolution) may be anytime in November, perhaps two weeks after (the Sarawak Budget),” he told reporters after attending the Sarawak Women of Tomorrow 2026 event today.
Media reports indicate that the Sarawak state assembly is scheduled to sit from Oct 12 to 21.
