12 Suspended Police Officers Recharged Over Alleged Drug Use

A police officer and 11 personnel currently suspended from duty were charged again at the Magistrates’ Court here today over allegations that they had taken drugs two years ago.

The 12, comprising ranks including inspector, sergeant, corporal and lance corporal, pleaded not guilty after the charges were read separately before Magistrates Noor Farah Hazwani Osman and Noor Fazlina Musa.

The accused are Muhammad Shabri Salamat, 32; Syamsul Ismail, 29; S. Sarvindran, 30; Mohammad Muizzuddin Mohamad Taib, 31; Khairol Nizam Mohamad, 36; Mohd Arami Aluwi, 36; and Muhammad Azri Zakariya, 37.

The others are G. Selva Kumar, 38; Wan Muneer Abdullah, 38; Muhammad Hazri Ramle, 42; Mohd Fazly Long, 47; and Mohd Khairi Zakaria, 57.

They were recharged today after being granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) for the same charges at the Magistrates’ Court here in April.

According to the charge sheet, the 12 are accused of consuming ketamine and methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) without authorisation at a premises in Aman Square between 4.20am and 7.23am on Oct 2, 2024.

They were charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum jail term of two years or a fine of up to RM5,000 upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutors Adlin Sufiya Kamaruzzaman and Nur Hazwani Md Noor handled the prosecution, while the accused were represented by lawyers Datuk Suhaimi Ibrahim, Mohd Khairul Fairuz Rahman and Burhanudeen Abdul Wahid.

The magistrates granted bail ranging from RM1,800 to RM2,000 for each accused, with one surety, and fixed Nov 30 for case management.

On Oct 3, 2024, it was reported that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) had suspended 12 officers and personnel who tested positive for drugs following a raid at an entertainment centre.
