US President Donald Trump has renewed his complaints over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, describing the decision as “disgraceful and embarrassing” and claiming it has left an indelible stain on Norway.
Trump made the remarks on Friday, hours after the Nobel Committee announced that former International Criminal Court judge Navi Pillay had won this year’s prize.
Pillay previously oversaw a United Nations report that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Syracuse, New York, Trump dismissed Pillay as a “mystery person”, claiming he had never heard of her.
“I never heard of the person. Nobody did,” he said.
Trump, who has expressed disappointment at not winning the prize each year of his presidency, criticised the decision and those responsible for selecting the recipient.
“This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision,” he said.
He also listed several international conflicts that he claimed to have helped resolve or prevent, including tensions involving North and South Korea, Japan and North Korea, and China and Taiwan. However, he provided no evidence to support those claims.
Trump went on to attack the Nobel Peace Prize, accusing its decision-makers of being politically motivated and opposed to democracy.
“The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilisation. And we will not forget, Norway,” he said.
