A Datuk who chairs a federal government-linked agency is expected to be charged at the Sessions Court on Thursday (Oct 15) over the alleged sale of government land in Penang below market value.
The man, who is in his 50s, is expected to face a charge under Section 23 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.
The suspect is also a state leader of a political party and contested in the previous general election.
The case concerns the alleged disposal of eight plots of land in South Seberang Perai in 2015. The man is accused of abusing his position when he was the agency’s deputy chairman and a board member to approve the sale.
The land was allegedly sold to a company suspected of being owned by an associate of the suspect, resulting in estimated losses of about RM1.96 million due to the below-market prices.
On Aug 21, the MACC remanded the man and four others for four days to assist investigations into the case.
The other four suspects comprise two company directors, a technical manager and a female clerk. It remains unclear whether they will also be charged on Thursday.
The MACC had previously said the suspects were detained over alleged abuse of power involving the disposal of land belonging to a government agency under a ministry in Penang.
