A school bus driver who stopped to let a pupil rescue an injured kitten by the roadside has been fired, sparking outrage among parents who are now demanding her reinstatement.
Cynthia Morgan, 67, lost her job last week after allowing an elementary school pupil to get off her bus to rescue the injured kitten along a rural road in Maryland, United States.
Morgan had worked as a school bus driver for Harford County Public Schools in northeastern Maryland for 11 years.
Her dismissal has angered parents, who launched a petition describing the decision as unfair and highlighting her clean service record. The petition has since gathered more than 7,500 signatures in support of Morgan.
Parents said Morgan was much more than a bus driver, describing her as a caring figure who went out of her way to look after the children under her care.
According to them, she regularly bought school supplies and birthday presents for every child on her bus using her own money.
Meanwhile, the rescued kitten was taken to the Jarrettsville Veterinary Centre for treatment. Veterinary staff said it was doing well despite sustaining a minor injury to its nose.
The kitten is expected to be put up for adoption soon, giving it the chance to find a new home after its roadside rescue.
