Opposition Calls For Authorities To Resolve Negeri Sembilan Royal Crisis

Date:

Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin has called for the Negeri Sembilan royal succession dispute to be resolved through proper legal channels, in line with the state constitution and established procedures.

He said his side respected the Conference of Rulers’ decree that the dispute must be settled in accordance with the provisions of the Negeri Sembilan Constitution of 1959 (UUTKNS).

Hamzah stressed that all parties should give the relevant authorities sufficient room to resolve the matter in an orderly manner.

“All parties must allow legitimate legal mechanisms and customs to determine the best solution in accordance with proper procedures and wisdom, in order to safeguard the sovereignty of the royal institution, uphold the rule of law and protect the well-being of the people of Negeri Sembilan,” he said in a statement today.

On Wednesday, the Conference of Rulers called for the dispute over the position of the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan to be resolved by the relevant stakeholders and authorised parties through legitimate, orderly and credible channels.

The crisis stemmed from a proclamation dated April 19, 2026, issued by the Undangs Yang Empat to remove Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir from the throne and appoint Tunku Nadzaruddin Tuanku Ja’afar as his successor.

The validity of the proclamation and whether it complied with the Negeri Sembilan Constitution of 1959 have since become the subject of a dispute.

On July 31, the Dewan Keadilan dan Undang (DKU) ruled that the proclamation was invalid, citing, among other matters, questions over the status of several signatories and compliance with the prescribed procedures. It also affirmed that Tuanku Muhriz remained the Yang di-Pertuan Besar.

However, on Sept 16, members of the state executive council announced that the removal proclamation and the appointment of a successor had been completed, declaring Tuanku Muhriz removed from the throne and recognising Tunku Nadzaruddin as the new Yang di-Pertuan Besar.

The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) subsequently stated on Sept 17 that the April 19 proclamation was invalid because it failed to comply with the mandatory requirements of Article 10 of the state constitution.

The Conference of Rulers also urged outside parties not to interfere in or politicise the dispute, stressing that it should be left to the relevant stakeholders and authorised authorities to resolve through lawful channels.
