Two students aged 16 and 17, believed to be a couple, have been arrested on suspicion of stealing a motorcycle outside a petrol station in Salak Bharu, Sungai Siput, last Wednesday.
The teenagers were detained during raids at two houses in Kuala Kangsar at about 12.05am on Thursday.
Sungai Siput district police chief Superintendent Charan Ai Wan said preliminary investigations found that the incident occurred at about 8.05pm when the 42-year-old motorcycle owner stopped at the petrol station to withdraw money from an automated teller machine (ATM).
The victim discovered that his dark blue Honda EX5, which had been parked outside the station, had disappeared after he finished his transaction.
He searched the surrounding area but was unable to locate the motorcycle before suspecting that it had been stolen.
Charan said investigations revealed that the victim had left the motorcycle unlocked while using the ATM.
During the raids, police recovered the victim’s Honda EX5 along with several other items believed to be connected to the case. Officers also seized a Yamaha LC135 motorcycle, two helmets, clothing and a bunch of motorcycle keys to assist with investigations.
“During questioning, the male suspect admitted to taking his girlfriend to the petrol station before she got off and took the victim’s motorcycle,” Charan said.
The two suspects are believed to have subsequently returned to Kuala Kangsar with the stolen motorcycle.
Urine screening tests on both teenagers returned negative results.
Charan said the suspects had been remanded for three days to assist with investigations under Section 379A of the Penal Code, which concerns motor vehicle theft.
The case went viral after CCTV footage allegedly showing two individuals stealing a motorcycle was shared on social media.
