With more people moving abroad each year, the international organization InterNations has released its Expat Insider 2025 Report, ranking the top 10 countries for foreign residents based on quality of life, ease of settling in, and economic factors. For 2025, the list features Panama, Colombia, Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam, China, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Spain, and Malaysia as the best destinations for expats.
Panama tops the list for the second year in a row. It’s a favorite among retirees thanks to affordable public transport, stunning natural scenery, a rich variety of food and leisure options, and its famously friendly locals. Its welcoming culture also appeals to professionals looking for work abroad.
Colombia has jumped from fifth place in 2024 to second in 2025. Expats cite low living costs, high quality of life, and a sense of optimism as key draws. One female expat described Colombia as a country “full of opportunity and purpose” with a spirit of working together for a better future — especially noticeable in rural communities.
Mexico ranks third, with expats saying it’s easy to integrate into local culture, build friendships, and enjoy a lively social life. However, quality of life can be uneven. One expat noted challenges such as undrinkable tap water, aging infrastructure, and a different sense of time, joking that “mañana” doesn’t always mean tomorrow.
Thailand wins over foreigners with its warm people and diverse cuisine. A female expat said Thailand’s large international community is mutually supportive and comes with a high sense of well-being. Foreign salaries also tend to be higher than local wages, and expatriates are less bound by strict laws or social rules — though cultural awareness, such as respecting hierarchy and avoiding confrontation, is crucial.
Vietnam continues to attract expats with its rapid economic growth and high happiness levels. One expat highlighted Vietnamese cuisine — from Hanoi-style grilled pork to steamed rice rolls — and called the country a dream for coffee lovers. However, because weather varies greatly between the north, central, and south, newcomers are advised to check forecasts when traveling or choosing where to live.
Asia stands out on the 2025 list, with five countries in the top 10. China and Malaysia are new entries this year, with respondents citing lower personal financial pressure and affordable housing as major advantages.
Meanwhile, Panama, Colombia, and Mexico show that Latin American countries remain strong draws due to their friendly cultures and social appeal. The UAE and Spain, though less “typical” expat choices, earned high marks for their outstanding quality of life. Together, these diverse destinations reflect what expats worldwide are looking for when searching for a second home.
