The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has warned members of the Selangor royal family against abusing their status to deceive others for personal gain.
His Royal Highness stressed that royal status did not give anyone the right to act as they pleased, reminding all members of the royal family to respect the law and comply with regulations.
“We also have a responsibility to protect the good name of the royal family and the Selangor royal institution. Every member is accountable for their behaviour and actions, as one person’s conduct can affect public perception of the entire Selangor royal family.
“The way we conduct ourselves, interact with society and carry out our responsibilities must reflect the dignity and authority of the family and the institution,” he said.
The Sultan delivered the royal address at a royal tea reception with members of the royal family at Padang Mahkota, Istana Alam Shah, on Tuesday, held in conjunction with celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of his reign.
Sultan Sharafuddin urged members of the royal family to remain united in defending the dignity of the monarchy, preserving the family’s honour, setting a good example and treating the public with courtesy and consideration.
He was accompanied by Tengku Permaisuri Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, Raja Muda Selangor Tengku Amir Shah and his wife, Datin Paduka Seri Afzaa Fadini Abdul Aziz.
The Sultan also called on members of the royal family to maintain strong family ties, avoid hostility and ensure that minor disagreements did not lead to divisions.
He said differences of opinion and misunderstandings should be resolved wisely and amicably, rather than through attempts to stir conflict, spread false stories or make hurtful remarks.
“Guard your words and manners, including when using social media, and practise mutual understanding, tolerance and forgiveness. I also urge all members of the royal family to help and care for one another,” he said.
Sultan Sharafuddin stressed that family members should not gather only for ceremonies and celebrations, but should also offer support and assistance when relatives face difficulties.
He added that love, responsibility and mutual respect between older and younger generations should be nurtured so these values could be passed on to future generations.
The Sultan expressed pleasure at the attendance of nearly 1,200 members of the Selangor royal family at the reception, saying the gathering was an opportunity to strengthen family bonds as part of the silver jubilee celebrations.
“Some of my relatives attending this afternoon are people I have not seen for a long time, while others are younger members who have now grown into adulthood. Their presence means a great deal to me.
“This gathering not only brings me joy, but also reminds us of our shared responsibility to preserve family harmony and uphold the dignity of the Selangor royal institution,” he said.
