A man in China has won praise online after finding a bag containing 38,000 yuan (about RM22,000) in cash and devising a clever way to ensure it was returned to its rightful owner.
The incident took place on October 19 in Xiangyang, Hubei province, when the man found a bag downstairs containing an identity card, bank cards, car keys and 38,000 yuan in cash.

Rather than simply posting a conventional lost-and-found notice, he put up a message inside the building’s lift with the last four digits of his phone number concealed.
Instead, he provided a clue based on four specific digits from the owner’s identity card, allowing the rightful owner to identify themselves when calling him.
The clever approach was designed to make it more likely that only the genuine owner could successfully contact him, while reducing the risk of prank calls or unwanted attention.
The story went viral on October 21, with the topic “Man Finds 38,000 Yuan and Leaves a Puzzle for the Owner” trending at the top of online searches.
Netizens praised the man’s ingenuity, with some marvelling at how clever the idea was. Many also applauded the method for protecting both the lost property and the finder’s privacy.
