M’sian Woman Lends Brother RM50,000, Gets Shamed By Family For Demanding Repayment

Date:

A Malaysian woman who spent years saving money to buy her own home has been left RM50,000 poorer after lending the money to her elder brother to rescue his struggling business, only to be blamed by her own family for asking to be repaid.

The woman, who works in Kuala Lumpur, shared her experience on social media, describing how her attempt to help her brother through a financial crisis turned into a family dispute that left her feeling betrayed and humiliated.

She said her married elder brother, who has two children, often portrayed himself as generous in front of relatives despite repeatedly turning to their mother for financial help.

“He’s asked for money so many times that I suspect our family savings are already drained dry. Well, I wouldn’t know anyway, since none of it was ever for me,” she wrote.

Her ordeal began when her brother suddenly called, claiming his business was facing a severe cash flow crisis. He told her he needed RM50,000 within days or his business would collapse, leaving him heavily in debt.

“Help your brother just this once, I will definitely pay you back within six months. I’m your biological brother, would I cheat you?” he allegedly promised.

Their mother also urged her to help, reminding her that they were family and asking what would happen to her brother’s two children if his business failed.

Trusting their assurances, the woman eventually transferred her hard-earned RM50,000 to him.

However, when the six-month repayment deadline arrived, her brother did not return the money. When she asked about it, he said he was facing financial difficulties and needed more time.

She was subsequently shocked to see his Facebook posts showing him and his family enjoying expensive staycations, dining at high-end restaurants and showing off new smartphones.

“I was completely stunned. After struggling with myself, I reminded him again that the money was loaned to help him out of an emergency, and now I needed it back,” she wrote.

Instead of apologising, her brother reportedly questioned why she needed so much money, arguing that she was single and had no children to support.

“You’re a single woman with no husband and no kids, what do you need so much money for? I have a whole family to feed, can’t you be more understanding?” he allegedly told her.

Her mother also reprimanded her, questioning why she was demanding repayment from her own brother after voluntarily lending him the money.

“Now that you’re capable, you start settling accounts with your own brother? When you lent him the money, did you ever consider family feelings?” her mother reportedly said.

The dispute escalated further during a family dinner a few months later, when the woman once again tried to discuss repayment.

Instead of agreeing on a repayment plan, her brother allegedly embarrassed her in front of their relatives, accusing her of repeatedly chasing him for money and suggesting she wanted him to suffer misfortune.

Her sister-in-law reportedly sided with him, arguing that family members should not be so calculative about money.

Other relatives also criticised the woman, saying she earned a good income and did not have the same financial responsibilities as her brother, so she should help the family more.

Feeling betrayed and exhausted, the woman said she had been made out to be the villain despite lending the money to help her brother during an emergency.

“One after another, everyone made me out to be the bad guy. Fine… since things have come to this, I guess I really deserve it,” she wrote.

Her story sparked outrage among netizens, with some advising her to consider legal action to recover the RM50,000, while others urged her to establish firm boundaries with family members.

One commenter warned people against revealing how much money they had saved, suggesting that doing so could invite unwanted financial demands.

Another urged the woman to stop providing financial support to her family and reconsider her relationships with relatives who had turned against her.

A third summed up the situation with the remark: “What you lend out is goodwill; what comes back in return is resentment.”
