Jasin MP Zulkifli Ismail has raised concerns over the New Age Movement in Parliament, describing it as a heretical teaching that could lead Muslims to apostasy and urging those involved to repent.
The Perikatan Nasional (PN) MP delivered the message through a pantun while posing a question to Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs), Senator Marhamah Rosli, in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.
The remarks were believed to be linked to viral allegations concerning Marhamah and the movement.
Zulkifli also urged Muslims to study tauhid (the oneness of God) and the 20 attributes of Allah to distinguish between the Creator and His creations, saying this was important to safeguard their faith.
“New Age Movement, a heretical teaching that leads to apostasy. Those involved must repent immediately,” he said in the pantun before proceeding with his fourth question.
Marhamah had previously been asked about the issue by Pokok Sena MP Datuk Ahmad Saad, also from PN, but did not elaborate on the allegations linking her to the movement.
Instead, she reminded MPs and the public to verify information before making judgements.
“I would like to remind everyone, including the Honourable Member for Pokok Sena and all members here, as well as myself, that before passing judgement or believing stories circulating outside, we should remember Allah’s message in Surah Al-Hujurat to practise tabayyun — investigating and verifying information,” she said.
Marhamah added that it was unfair to judge her based solely on one-sided accounts.
“I would like to urge everyone to verify the facts. May our struggle for Islam not be limited to speaking loudly, but also reflect good character in our actions,” she said.
