A man from the United Kingdom has captured the attention of Malaysians after revealing his collection of 34 cars, most of which are from Malaysian national carmaker Proton.
Known as Jon Coupland, the self-proclaimed Proton enthusiast says the brand holds a special value and uniqueness, even as some of its older models gradually fade from public memory.
In a post on Threads, Jon introduced himself as a “Protonholic” and revealed that he was still searching for more models to add to his growing collection.
“I’m Jon and I’m a Protonholic. If you’re new here, I collect cars, mostly Protons. I currently have 34 cars in my ever-growing collection, consisting of vehicles that people have forgotten about,” he wrote.
His post drew attention from Malaysian social media users, many of whom expressed admiration for his passion for preserving cars made in Malaysia.
One user, @amruzainalabidin, praised Jon’s collection, particularly his well-maintained Proton GTI.
“A Proton GTI in perfect condition wouldn’t last a week in Malaysia unless it was kept in a bunker. What a great collection,” the user commented.
Another user, @ilovedaboba, thanked Jon for taking care of Malaysia’s automotive icons.
“Salute to you! Thank you for preserving our Malaysian icons,” the user wrote.
Meanwhile, @m2o_a_k_a_mrpunisher expressed appreciation for Jon’s support of Malaysian-made products.
“Thank you for supporting Malaysian products, sir,” the user commented.
Jon’s interest in Malaysian cars is not limited to Proton, either. Another user, @diecastprince, suggested that he add the Perodua Kancil and Myvi to his collection.
Responding to the suggestion, Jon revealed that he had previously owned a Perodua Kelisa.
“I have a Kelisa,” he replied.
