A 56-year-old Filipino contract worker was electrocuted and died while installing and repairing lights at a school in Batu 1, Kudat, on Wednesday.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene after the ladder he was using came into contact with an electrical cable.
Kudat Fire and Rescue Station chief Assistant Superintendent Darikson Galanang said the department received an emergency call at 8.31am, prompting nine firefighters to be deployed.
“Upon arrival, firefighters found a man believed to have been electrocuted near the school gate,” he said in a statement.
Preliminary investigations found that the victim was carrying out lighting installation and repair work when the ladder came into contact with an electrical cable.
Darikson said firefighters contacted Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd to disconnect the power supply before retrieving the victim.
The man was moved to a safe area at 9.15am after the electricity supply was cut off. However, Health Ministry personnel subsequently confirmed his death at the scene.
His body was later handed over to the police for further action.
The operation, which involved the police, Health Ministry and Sabah Electricity, concluded at 9.46am.
