Date:

A 39-year-old man has pleaded guilty to setting fire to a Mitsubishi Xpander parked at an apartment complex in Penang in May.

S Hari Ram entered the guilty plea after the charge was read out before Sessions Court Judge Irwan Suainbon.

He was charged with committing mischief by fire with the intention of damaging the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), which belonged to a 34-year-old man.

The incident allegedly took place at about 4.01am on May 3 at the car park of Block 247, Taman Cemerlang, Jalan Perak, in the Northeast District.

The charge was brought under Section 435 of the Penal Code, which carries a prison sentence of up to 14 years and a fine upon conviction.

Deputy Public Prosecutor M Darrshini handled the prosecution, while Hari Ram was unrepresented.

The court granted him bail of RM10,000 with one surety and imposed an additional condition prohibiting him from interfering with prosecution witnesses.

The court fixed Dec 2 for the submission of the case facts and sentencing.

Media reports on May 3 said five vehicles parked at the ground-floor car park of an apartment complex had been destroyed by fire.
